All Madrid Municipal Police units will have taser pistols in October

One year after the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, announced in the plenary session of Cibeles the acquisition of taser pistols for the Municipal Police, the agents will be able to start using these devices in their daily work. And it is that throughout the month of October these will be distributed among all the units of the municipal security forces after the purchase by the City Council of the capital of a total of 175.

This is confirmed by sources from the City Council's Security and Emergencies Area, who point out that up to now the Municipal Police only had four taser pistols that had been used in the testing phase. During the next month the new equipment will arrive and will be available to all units of the corps.

Until now, given the small number of devices that the corporation had, they had been used by the Security Support Units. A circumstance that will be corrected in the coming weeks with the intention that by the end of October the agents can already use the 175 they will have.

But, according to the sources consulted by EL MUNDO, that number will continue to increase in the immediate future. From the department directed by Inmaculada Sanz, they point out that during the year 2021 the Consistory will undertake "a second purchase" of material so that "they can reach all the patrols that are on the streets."

These tasers are weapons designed to immobilize or physically incapacitate a person using five-second electric shocks that mimic nerve signals and confuse muscles, especially in the arm and leg areas. They also have a no-load power of 50,000 volts, which is reduced to 400 with a current of 2.1 megaamps when they come into contact with people, and can be fired at a distance of up to 7.5 meters. However, the optimal distance for the discharge to take effect is between three and five meters.

The agents that carry these defensive elements will also be accompanied by a vest equipped with a recording camera to guarantee its correct use, they stand out in the Palacio de Cibeles, where they affirm that the police officers equipped with these electronic control elements have certifications officers that enables them to make use of them. An authorization that has been issued by the Department of Training in Electronic Control Devices of the Integral Center for Training in Security and Emergencies (CIFSE) of the Madrid City Council, recently created.

At the end of April, the Madrid City Council distributed the first four taser pistols among the agents of the Security Support Units of the capital, who did not use them except for a frustrated attempt in which they only He came to activate the recording camera during a case of gender violence, according to reports from the Consistory.
