Samsung Electronics announced the findings of a study published by Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology, a scientific journal dedicated to ear, nose, and throat (ENT) research. The study indicated that Galaxy Buds Pro's Ambient Sound feature is effective in helping people with mild to moderate hearing loss better hear the sounds around them.

The research was conducted in partnership with Samsung Medical Center, Asia's leading hospital. Samsung has been working in collaboration with the Medical Center for more than 10 years, focusing on the impact mobile devices can have on hearing and researching new ways to optimize sound experiences for users. This research marks an important step in Samsung's ongoing commitment to collaborate on innovations that benefit people.

The study evaluated the efficacy of a hearing aid, a personal sound amplification product, and the Galaxy Buds Pro. According to the authors, no studies have so far included true wireless earphones when evaluating the clinical performance of hearing devices. The study is the first to demonstrate the potential benefit of wireless headphones for people with mild to moderate hearing impairments. The device has the potential to improve the lives of 1.5 billion people around the world who are currently living with some degree of hearing loss.[1]

Electro-acoustic evaluation

Electro-acoustic characteristics of each device were evaluated to see if they met key performance criteria for hearing aids: output sound pressure level, frequency range, equivalent input noise and total harmonic distortion. The results revealed that the Galaxy Buds Pro met each of these criteria, evidencing comparable performance to the gadgets.

Sound Amplification Assessment

A sound amplification assessment was performed to examine whether the devices adequately amplified sound. Each device was tested at seven different frequencies, and all showed an appropriate level of amplification.

Clinical Performance Assessment

Finally, a clinical performance assessment investigated changes in people's hearing levels with and without the devices, and their ability to recognize words and sentences. Participants had mild to moderate hearing loss, with a median age of 63 years. Statistical significance was observed at 1,000Hz, 2,000Hz and 6,000Hz, which means that the Galaxy Buds Pro have sufficiently amplified sound at all three frequencies of speech tones. Additionally, more than 57% of the participants reported that the Galaxy Buds Pro helped them communicate in a quiet environment.

It was also found that using the Galaxy Buds Pro people could better understand spoken words. The results found a statistically significant improvement in the performance of all three devices compared to the unaided mode results. This suggests that, in conjunction with hearing aids and personal sound amplification products, the Galaxy Buds Pro could provide a communication benefit for people with hearing loss, especially those with mild and moderate loss.

“As we develop new products and services, we are aware of how our technology can help people challenge barriers and do more. These findings reflect our ongoing commitment to creating innovations that empower everyone to better enjoy everyday experiences, and we plan to roll out the trial to more participants in the coming months,” said Han-gil Moon, Master and Advanced Audio Lab Leader at Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications Business.

Galaxy Buds Pro feature Ambient Sound, which can amplify nearby sounds by up to 20 decibels, and with four levels to choose from, users can adjust and personalize the way they experience sound according to their your needs.
