The master faces are Israeli invention, which have developed a neuronal network called Stylegan that it is capable of generating facial images capable of supplanting identification systems.

The work published by the Blavatnik computer school and the Electrical Engineering School, both of Tel Aviv, suggests that it is possible to generate these master faces for more than 40% of the population using only 9 faces synthesized by said neuronal network.

When trying Stylegan, the researchers discovered that a single face could unlock 20% of all identities of the Open Database Laboled Faces in the Wild (LFW) of the University of Massachusetts, a common repository that is used for theDevelopment and test of facial identification systems.

Stylegan works looking for the most common and generalized facial features of among thousands of photographs and then Iteratively repeat the process. The system uses an evolutionary algorithm coupled to a neuronal predictor that estimates the probability that the current candidate is generalized better than the candidates generated in previous phases.

In different tests the researchers found that it was possible to obtain authentication in 40-60% of the time with only nine images created.

Published research warns that facial recognition technology is especially vulnerable today, and puts its future in the air. This demonstration confirms that the oldest method, that of passwords, remains the most reliable (despite its imperfections).
